Trail Running at Karang Boma: Uluwatu’s Quietest Way to Start the Day

Karang Boma isn’t only a place for sunsets. Before the clifftop begins filling with visitors in the afternoon, the surrounding landscape offers a completely different way to experience this part of Uluwatu: on foot.
For anyone looking for trail running in Uluwatu, the roads and tracks around Karang Boma combine quiet stretches of the Bukit Peninsula, coastal views, jungle paths and challenging descents towards the ocean.
Three Karang Boma Running Trails
The terrain surrounding Karang Boma offers several very different running experiences.
7.5km Uluwatu Back-Road Loop
The easiest of the three routes is a roughly 7.5km loop through Uluwatu’s quieter back roads.
With relatively gentle elevation and mostly straightforward terrain, it is a good option for runners wanting distance without a highly technical trail.
The route also offers a glimpse of a quieter side of the Bukit Peninsula, away from Uluwatu’s busier main roads and beach clubs.
5km Jungle and Clifftop Trail
For a more adventurous run, a roughly 5km jungle and clifftop route heads through the landscape surrounding Karang Boma and towards the Uluwatu Temple area before looping back.
Expect a mixture of tracks, vegetation, exposed sections and uneven ground.
This is less about setting a road-running pace and more about experiencing the natural terrain of Uluwatu’s southern coastline.
Extra care should always be taken around cliff edges and on loose or uneven ground.
5.3km Nyang Nyang Beach Trail
The most challenging option heads from the clifftop towards Nyang Nyang Beach.
The approximately 5.3km route includes a substantial descent from the Bukit cliffs towards sea level before climbing back up again.
Steep sections, loose surfaces and the return climb make this a considerably harder run than its distance might suggest.
The reward is one of Uluwatu’s most dramatic combinations: cliff running, ocean views and time on the sand at Nyang Nyang Beach.
A Different Side of Karang Boma
Most people discover Karang Boma because of its sunset views over the Indian Ocean.
Early in the day, however, the atmosphere can be completely different.
The roads are quieter, temperatures are generally more comfortable for running, and the clifftop landscape becomes less of a viewpoint and more of somewhere to explore.
There are no formal race courses or marked running tracks here. These are existing roads, paths and trails through Karang Boma and the surrounding Bukit Peninsula, so conditions can change and runners should choose routes appropriate for their experience.
Coffee on the Karang Boma Cliff
Located directly on the Karang Boma clifftop, Copy House offers somewhere to slow down after exploring the area.
Set among grass and traditional architecture overlooking the Indian Ocean, the small cliffside café serves Indonesian coffee, cold coconuts and simple refreshments in one of Uluwatu’s most relaxed settings.
Copy House currently opens from 3pm until sunset, making it particularly well suited to an afternoon or early-evening run followed by sunset on the cliff.
Groups interested in organised access outside normal opening hours can contact Copy House directly regarding availability.
Getting to Karang Boma
Karang Boma is located on the southern coastline of Uluwatu’s Bukit Peninsula, close to Nyang Nyang Beach and Uluwatu Temple.
For runners, it offers something increasingly difficult to find in this part of Bali: open space, varied terrain and some of the Bukit Peninsula’s most impressive coastal scenery.
Whether it is a gentle back-road loop, a jungle trail or the steep run towards Nyang Nyang Beach, Karang Boma running trails offer another reason to experience the cliff long before sunset begins.
